Coolmore first-season sire Gleneagles tees up a debut Pattern winner

First-season sire Gleneagles was represented by a breakthrough Pattern winner when son Royal Lytham came out best of a three-way photo finish to the Group 2 Tattersalls July Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday.

In the process, he becomes the first of this year's freshmen in Europe to have posted more than one black-type winner, with son Southern Hills having landed the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.

The other first-season sires with stakes scorers on the board are Brazen Beau (Avengers Queen), Cable Bay (Liberty Beach), Due Diligence (Good Vibes), Outstrip (Flippa The Strippa) and Sidestep (Real Appeal), while the US-based American Pharoah was on the mark with Prix du Bois victor Maven.

Gleneagles – a supremely well-bred son of Galileo, being a brother to Group 1 scorers Happily and Marvellous out of a Group 2-winning sister to Giant's Causeway – won the National Stakes at two and the 2,000 Guineas, Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes at three.

He has 109 two-year-olds in his first crop and has posted six winners from 17 runners to date, including the Chesham Stakes third Highland Chief. One of his best runners, Precious Moments, has yet to break her maiden but has run fifth in the Albany Stakes and second in the Airlie Stud Stakes.

Royal Lytham, trained by Aidan O'Brien for Coolmore partners, had won a Navan maiden and finished seventh to Arizona in the Coventry Stakes last month.

He was bred in France by Haras du Logis Saint-Germain and is the third surviving foal out of the Anabaa mare Gotlandia, a Listed winner over seven furlongs and runner-up to Anna Salai in the Group 3 Prix de la Grotte. His four-year-old half-brother Shareef Star, by Sea The Stars, was a 700,000gns yearling and scored in a ten furlong handicap at Newcastle for Sir Michael Stoute in May.

Gotlandia is a half-sister to Listed-placed Gaiete out of Grenade, a winning Bering sister to Fillies' Mile scorer Glorosia. She has a Siyouni yearling colt and was covered by Ribchester last year.

Coolmore's MV Magnier paid €180,000 for Royal Lytham at last year's Arqana August Yearling Sale, an auction enjoying a fine run of success. The 2019 renewal has also yielded Arizona, Chesham Stakes runner-up Lope Y Fernandez and the highly touted Visinari, third in the July Stakes, while graduates of the previous year's sale include the top-class three-year-olds Fleeting, Sottsass and Watch Me.
