Subjectivist represents the second St Leger hope in as many years for Susan Hearn's Mascalls Stud in Essex, after the year-younger sibling of last year's runner-up Sir Ron Priestley made all to win the Listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton last week.

Such a performance suggests that the Teofilo colt Subjectivist is at least on a par with his Australia half-brother at this stage of the season, with the colt a general 33-1 shot for the Doncaster Classic on September 12.

The closely-related pair were bred out of the multiple stakes-placed Danehill Dancer mare Reckoning, who joined the Mascalls Stud broodmare band when purchased for 160,000gns at Tattersalls in December 2014.

The mare has repaid that price already with three of her offspring - Sir Ron Priestley, Subjectivist and her two-year-old Muhaarar filly - selling for a combined 232,000gns to trainer Mark Johnston at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Sale in recent years.

"Reckoning is a fine lady and turning out to be quite a nice buy," said Susan's husband Barry, who is best known for his work promoting sporting events through his Matchroom organisation.

"She's got a Ulysses yearling filly at home who'll go to the sales this year. She also has a Roaring Lion colt foal at foot and is in foal to Too Darn Hot. The Roaring Lion is an excellent foal and the Ulysses looks top-drawer as well.

"For a small operation like Susan's - she's got eight broodmares or so - to have a horse like Reckoning, whose given us the fun of a horse like Sir Ron Priestley and now Subjectivist, that's a really good result for a small yard."

He added: "We're very optimistic about the future and Reckoning seems to be doing very well for us."

Mascalls Stud has bred some other notable Group 1 performers down the years, including Urban Fox, winner of the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh in 2018, and the late Red Carpet, who was runner-up to Minardi in the millennium Middle Park Stakes.
