US tipster Tom Collins looks to add to an impressive four winners last night
She's My Type
10.05 Belmont Park
1pt win
Border Town
1.03 Santa Anita
2pts win
Following a brilliant Belmont Stakes card last night, the top-class action continues at the New York venue with the feature $80,000 Lady Shipman Stakes (10.05) headlining a nine-race card on Sunday.
This 6f turf event looks wide open and the morning line reckons it will be 5-2 the field, with Cathal Lynch's Miss J Mackay the likely favourite despite a wide draw in gate 11.
However, that three-year-old filly looks pretty vulnerable on the back of a six-month layoff on just her second start in New York. Her only previous effort in the state came in November when she finished runner-up in the Stewart Manor Stakes in Aqueduct, which wasn't a bad effort but it looked a pretty weak field.
She has been seen on the track only once since, which was another second-placed finish at Laurel Park, and her works have been pretty good at that track in the interim.
However, she bumps into a couple of ex-European-bred runners in this field, most notably She's My Type, who will make just her fifth career outing for trainer Christophe Clement.
This daughter of Dunkerque only made her debut at Gulfstream Park in December and fairly routed a useful field despite showing inexperience throughout and being given plenty to do by rider Tyler Gaffalione.
She surged through with a big late kick to win over a mile that day and marked herself down as a filly with a huge future. She's My Type backed up that victory with another success at Gulfstream the following month in the Listed Ginger Brew Stakes.
Again ridden cold out the back, She's My Type flew home to beat the more experienced Abscond and Moral Reasoning in what looked a pretty hot heat.
She fell a bit short on her two subsequent outings in Grade 3 and Listed company but was far from disgraced with fourth- and third-placed finishes and should get a decent pace to chase. I fancy her to regain the winning thread if she's granted a clear run.
There is also top-class action over on the west coast at Santa Anita but you will have to stay up late if you're going to watch the feature Grade 3 $100,000 American Stakes (1.03).
It looks a fantastic punting opportunity, though, with a steady pace expected from the poorly drawn Bolo. He clearly has a big chance on his Shoemaker Mile victory last year, but he's first off a layoff and I reckon he'll be run down in the straight.
The horse that may get the best trip is Border Town, who isn't devoid of early speed but often drops out. He has a fine change of gear once asked and the presence of the red-hot Flavien Prat further boosts his chance.
Unexposed after just six starts, Border Town comes into this contest with a hat-trick of victories in his sights and his last-time-out victory in allowance optional claiming company proved how big an engine he possesses.
