US racing tips: Shane Ketteridge's two Saturday night selections at Gulfstream

A field of nine are set to go to post for the Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park, which features some experienced mares who are pitting their wits against younger rivals with plenty of potential.

Sugar Fix is a hardy mare and the 11-time winner will likely go off favourite, but my attention is turned to one of the two four-year-olds in the field, Avow, who is a Todd Pletcher-trained daughter of Arrogate.

This filly has a bright future. She is lightly raced with form figures of 112, all of which have been at this course, with her two victories being by a combined distance of 13 and a quarter lengths.

After those wins she had no answer for a huge longshot when finishing second in an allowance optional claiming race last month, but her speed figures have been improving with each outing and it was only her third start.

She is certainly one to keep on side as there is more improvement to come and Todd Pletcher does very well with these types of horses, so a fruitful 2023 campaign beckons.

The same track also hosts the Sunshine Sprint Stakes, which is run over 6f on the dirt course. The one I like is Legends Can’t Die, who was second in a competitive allowance optional claimer over 7f last time out and has enough ability to win this from stall four.

George Weaver’s gelding tried to hold off all rivals from the front on his latest run at this course but was just caught late on, so if he can replicate that effort over a furlong less here, then he should go very close.
