US expert Tom Collins picks out two likely winners at Will Rogers Downs
Gambler
8.45 Will Rogers Downs
2pts win
Far Out Kailee
11.45 Will Rogers Downs
1pt win
Stateside racing continues on Monday with Fonner Park and Will Rogers Downs keeping the show on the road, and given my knowledge at the former venue is virtually non-existent, both tips come at the latter Oklahoma track.
Although the Will Rogers meet only started two weeks ago, it is a surprise to see the usually prolific Karl Broberg boast a record of 0-13 at the venue.
Broberg, who was the leading trainer across America by wins between 2014 and 2019, has been unlucky so far with five seconds and two thirds and hopes are high that he can finally get of the mark in the $12,650 claimer (8.45).
He saddles Gambler, the 5-2 morning line favourite who is set to be partnered by Paulina Ramirez, a talented rider who is also due a change of luck as she has ridden all of Broberg's five runner-ups.
This three-year-old colt was bought for $110,000 as a foal, a price tag you rarely see with runners at this venue, and was highly tried in maiden special weight company on his first two outings.
Gambler was well fancied on debut for Joe Sharp at Ellis Park and showed a little bit before fading, then was given an impossible task at Churchill Downs when last of 11. The winner that day was Monomoy Girl, who has subsequently won five Grade 1 contests, including the Breeders' Cup Distaff back in November.
He was sent to Wayne Catalano's barn and showed speed in two starts over 6f, before absolutely hacking up in a maiden claimer at the Fair Grounds last time when he was allowed to dominate for the first time.
Broberg is very good with runners first up off the claim and picking up this smartly bred and unexposed three-year-old looks a wise move.
The slight drop back to 5½f looks sure to suit given the pace he showed that day and I would be surprised if he didn't follow up on his first outing at Will Rogers Downs.
Unlike Ramirez and Broberg, a combination to follow so far this meeting has been rider Leandro Goncalves and trainer Kari Craddock, who have 63 (5-8) and 33 per cent (3-9) win strike-rates at Will Rogers over the last two weeks.
The duo team up on two occasions on Monday's card and their best chance appears to be Far Out Kailee in the closing $8,250 claimer (11.45).
Formerly trained by Richard Baltas in California, Far Out Kailee recorded some good speed figures at tracks like Golden Gate Fields and Santa Anita in 2016 and 2017 before going through the hands of numerous trainers.
He seemed to be regressing at a rate of knots in 2018 and the start of last year, but immediately found form when sent to Will Rogers, winning his first three outings in claimers before being found out on his last start at the track in starter allowance company.
Far Out Kailee hasn't won since and showed little when well fancied on his return to Will Rogers two weeks ago, but that was his first outing for over two months and he is sure to improve.
If he returns to anything like the form he was in last year he will dot up in the weak race. Goncalves knows how to ride him and fingers crossed he can get an early lead.
