US expert Tom Collins hopes a wide draw won't ruin classy colt's chance at Tampa

Gilded Drama
7.30 Tampa Bay Downs
2pts win

North Dakota
9.00 Tampa Bay Downs
2pts win

Samy Camacho, the reigning champion jockey at Tampa Bay Downs, has been firing in the winners all year but remains six victories behind rival Antonio Gallardo, who bagged his 102nd success of the meeting at the weekend.

Camacho won't let the title go easily and he has another good book of rides on Wednesday, the best being Gilded Drama for trainer Gerald Bennett in the $10,300 claimer (7.30) for three-year-olds or older who have never won three races.

In for a claim of $8,000, Gilded Drama has won two of ten races in his career and seems to have improved since being sent to Tampa.

Having broken his duck in a maiden claimer over 5½f at Delaware Park, Gilded Drama began his Tampa career with a disappointing eighth of nine in claiming company over a mile.

Ridden that day by Angel Suarez, Gilded Drama showed up early but faded after halfway and clearly needed a drop back in trip to sprinting distances.

He proved that to be a good move when accounting for five opponents in a tougher race than this on his penultimate outing. Gilded Drama broke slowly but quickly found his stride and stayed on powerfully against the rail to pull clear of his foes late.

He didn't produce the same turn of foot last time out under Camacho but his stamina again gave way over 6½f and that race was contested by a couple of sharply improving sorts, so his fourth-placed finish wasn't too bad on the face of it.

Gilded Drama drops back down in class and distance and has been awarded a good draw in gate two, which should allow Camacho to stalk the early pace that will likely be set by the sole runner inside of him, Kalu.

Unlike Gilded Drama, my other selection on the Tampa card has not been handed a good draw as North Dakota is set to break widest of all in a ten-runner field for the $20,000 allowance optional claimer (9.00).

Shug McGaughey's colt didn't win any of his first six starts but was tried in maiden special weight company around the country and bumped into some useful horses along the way.

He posted improved speed figures for each start and his two Aqueduct placings in November last year were highly creditable given how much ground he was forced to make up.

McGaughey decided to send him to Gulfstream Park on his penultimate outing and that track clearly didn't suit him, but the opposite can be said for Tampa last time out.

North Dakota was held up off a fast pace and closed on the leaders like Pegasus rounding the homebend, eventually drawing clear under hands and heels riding to record a decisive first victory.

This is clearly a step up and his draw isn't ideal, but he should find a reasonable pitch in midfield under Gallardo and I'm hoping his strong, late burst can see him come out on top at a reasonable price.

Camacho rides likely market leader Uhtred, who is drawn in gate one. Christophe Clement does very well at this venue and Uhtred clearly has a lot of things going for him, but his morning line price of 5-2 is a bit short as he returns from a lengthy absence.
