US expert Tom Collins has two selections ready for a wet and wild Gulfstream
Be Gone Daddy
8.11 Gulfstream Park
1pt win
Maserati Man
9.15 Gulfstream Park
1pt win
Rain is forecast in Florida on Thursday evening and it is worth taking note that races scheduled for the turf may well come off that surface and take place on the dirt, which could turn sloppy.
When there is weather about at Gulfstream it makes the action far less predictable as biases can materialise after a couple of races, so it is not a day for a gung-ho attitude.
Although a sloppy surface often helps front-runners (less kickback and not easy to make up ground), the rain might not fall until midway through the evening, which might enable deep closer Be Gone Daddy to strike in the $23,000 claimer (8.11) for older horses.
Monica McGoey's son of Scat Daddy is a consistent performer in this Hallandale Beach track and should benefit from a fast early gallop thanks to the Liz Dobles-trained duo Stone Hands and Solar Warming.
Those rivals should clear the way for Be Gone Daddy, who is drawn in gate six, to track across into an inside position going around the first turn and from there rider Irad Ortiz will be wary of not getting too far behind.
This five-year-old likes to drop himself out and remaining in touching distance is very much the toughest task for Ortiz, whose booking is a clear sign that McGoey thinks today can be the day.
Currently on a ten-race losing streak, Be Gone Daddy was in a purple patch this time last year and following impressive wins in claiming, starter allowance and allowance optional claiming company, he was pitched into the deep end in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Mile.
Trained by Marcus Vitali then, Be Gone Daddy wasn't beaten far at all into fourth that day in a stacked field and anything like that kind of performance would make him a standout bet here.
Granted, he hasn't won in 14 months, but Be Gone Daddy only returned to his beloved Gulfstream three runs ago and has picked up the pieces on all three occasions without getting to the leaders, showing clear signs of revival in the process.
A smaller field will help with less traffic to negotiate and he is the best horse in this race if putting it all together now dropped in grade.
Another small field of seven will line-up in the $29,000 starter optional claimer (9.15) later on the card and by this point a pace and rail bias may have come to the fore.
If that is the case, Maserati Man becomes a good play for trainer Michael Yates, who has had 11 winners from just 48 runners (23 per cent strike-rate) this year.
An unexposed gelding after just five races, this $16,000 purchase has shown he has speed in abundance in his works – the latest of which (March 27) saw him post the fastest time over 3f out of 17 horses. It wasn't record-breaking standard but it was still plenty quick enough.
He has only had one run since that work and it came in this company in mid-April, where Maserati Man tracked a fast pace and loomed large four-wide off the bend having covered more distance than his rivals to get into a challenging position.
He found plenty under pressure but was forced to settle for the silver medal behind a game winner, with the duo seven-and-a-half-lengths clear of the rest of the field.
That was a clear personal best on speed figures alone and more is expected now that he is slightly eased in grade.
His draw in gate one isn't necessarily ideal as it could force rider Miguel Vasquez's hand early, but if he can take a rail sit throughout then he will be hard to hold in the stretch run.
