Tom Segal with his selections for the Tote Placepot at Newbury

There is almost no notable form to go on in the two-year-old novices that open the Newbury card, so it is probably best to go with a couple of well-bred runners in each leg.

Cream Of The Crop and Pomelo fit the criteria in the opener (1.05), while Bearaway looks a likely type on paper for the 6f novice (1.40). Babajan shaped well on his sole start at Newmarket last week and is also worth considering.

Things don't get much easier in the 6f handicap (2.15) that follows but Highland Dress wasn't beaten far in the Wokingham and might have found the ground a bit soft at Newmarket last time.

As usual, the Weatherbys Super Sprint (2.50) is big on numbers but short on quality and Get It looks the one to beat for Clive Cox. He is banker material to finish in the frame.

Fox Tal has the best form in the Listed Steventon Stakes (3.25) but he didn't look that straightforward in the Wolferton at Ascot on his reappearance. Faylaq should improve on his fourth at Newmarket now he drops back in trip last time and appears a much safer proposition for the Placepot.

Finally, Mark Johnston's horses are in great form and it makes sense to side with both of his runners, Themaxwecan and Rochester House, in the final leg (4.00).
