Christmas In April
Trainer: Colin Tizzard
3rd, Cheltenham, October 26
With a clearer passage Christmas In April might have given the first two home something to think about in this 2m5f handicap hurdle on this first run for the stable. He lost his place three out, and was briefly stopped in his tracks turning for home. Having been half a dozen lengths off the lead entering the straight, he finished strongly and was beaten only two and a quarter lengths. An encouraging return from a lightly raced six-year-old.

His form tailed off badly last season, but as a result he is looking well treated over fences and this return was a big step in the right direction. Ridden from the front by the champion jockey in this 3m1f handicap chase, the pace he set was unrelenting and most of the field were unable to stay within striking distance. Ultimately, he was unable to fend off a couple of rivals, but he rallied when headed to reward each-way backers (SP 14-1). A drop in trip might suit.

Sliding Doors
Ian Williams

3rd, Aintree, October 28
Running in just his fifth hurdle and making his handicap debut, this five-year-old showed enough promise here to suggest he is capable of landing a handicap in the coming weeks. Stepping up in distance to 3m½f suited, and he is not short of stamina as he was keeping on at the finish. There is more to come.
