It's a blank day for racing in Britain and Ireland but not in Dubai where there's some decent action across seven races on dirt and turf at Meydan.
Okay, it's not Dubai Carnival time just yet – that's still a couple of weeks away – but the UAE's premier track is staging a better meeting than just a typical local fixture.
James Doyle and Mickael Barzalona have their first Meydan mounts since Dubai World Cup day in March, and likewise Saeed bin Suroor sends out his first UAE runners since then.
There will be carnival clues, not least in the UAE 1,000 Guineas Trial and in a Listed race on the dirt. This meeting will also be the first time the turf has been used in the current campaign.
The day starts and ends with maiden events, not the most solid betting heats, so the first recommendation goes in the second race (2.35), a 1m1f turf handicap.
This isn't a great contest and Untold Secret will likely head the market. He has been in good form on dirt and ought to be okay back on turf. Still, the surface is a bit of a question mark – he hasn't raced on the grass since 2017 – and it'll be his 11th birthday in little more than a week.
There might be more value in Last Light. He's not an obvious one at first glance, a maiden after ten starts, but he's had only one run for his current trainer.
Last Light hasn't switched yards but Ali Albadwawi has taken over from Erwan Charpy at Green Stables since last season and the new guy might be a name to note.
Charpy had a poor strike-rate across the last few years but Albadwawi has had only six runners and one of them bolted up.
Last Light made an encouraging reappearance on dirt at Al Ain and will be happier back on turf. He's handily weighted on his best form and this looks a good opportunity.
If Last Light does go in – or at least runs well – the same trainer's Mudaarab will be worth a look in the 3.45, but that's a tricky race to call.
The second recommendation runs in the Guineas trial at 3.10. There are some decent-looking fillies in this and Asawermight be the pick of them.
She was a promising third in a maiden over course and distance on her debut, doing a lot of good work from off the pace. She did finish one place behind Home From Home, who showed a lot of speed, but Asawer is open to improvement.
It has to be noted that Asawer appears to be the connections' second string. Pat Dobbs, first jockey to Doug Watson, couldn't do the light weight in this race, so Sam Hitchcott may have had the choice and he rides the similarly named Awasef.
That filly has sound claims following a professional debut win so it's easy to see why any jockey would side with her over one who needs to improve. But that doesn't take away from Asawer's potential and the selection's rider, Oscar Chavez, has had a Meydan winner for Watson this season in a race where Dobbs and Hitchcott were on other horses.
The Listed Entisar (4.20) features four top-level winners from South America including For The Top, who won this race last year. The four-length second that day, Remorse, wound up finishing sixth in the Dubai World Cup and tries his luck again.
However, For The Top is getting on a bit and Remorse lacks a recent run, so they may all have to go some way to stop Atletico El Culano.
This horse is one of the South American Group 1 winners and his big success came over 1m4f in Uruguay. It was therefore quite an eyecatching UAE debut when he finished third in a Listed race over a mile at Meydan, keeping on nicely out wide.
Considering he'd been off six months, and that he now goes back up a couple of furlongs, his claims look strong.
The final selection goes in the 4.55, namely Maydanny. It's the Charpy-to-Albadwawi angle again.
This horse was a Listed winner in Britain in 2021. He was well beaten in one run in the UAE for Charpy in February, but that was a dirt Listed race and he's down in grade, albeit conceding weight, and back on turf for this reappearance.
