BANKER

(5.25 Nottingham)

It looks likely to rain throughout the day at Nottingham on Wednesday and that will play into the hands of Mick Appleby's Zapper Cass. The five-year-old topweight has dropped from a mark of 84 in July last year to 66 and gets into this 0-65 handicap thanks to a key bit of placing from the master trainer. Partnered by the capable Mark Crehan, who claims a further 5lb off his back, Zapper Cass, whose only turf win came on soft but has plenty of form on quick ground, looks likely to strike. He's run extremely creditably over an inadequate five furlongs on his two runs this year and now returns to the scene of his success.

EYECATCHER

Smile A Mile(6.35 Ripon)

First-time-out winner Rockin Roy, trained by Archie Watson, is likely to go off at odds-on in this contest given his form was boosted when runner-up The Great Heir won at Redcar earlier in the week. However, he has to give 4lb to the Mark Johnston-trained Smile A Mile, who can put a bitterly disappointing debut effort behind him to push the favourite close here. Seventh of eight when sent off the 8-11 favourite at Newcastle, he never really travelled and was beaten with the majority of the contest left, suggesting something must have been amiss. The race was won by Sabre, who has subsequently finished second in the Listed National Stakes, and a much better effort is expected here from the Slade Power colt.

STAT ATTACK

Sitar(2.50 Nottingham)

James Fanshawe has had 11 winners from 71 runners (15 per cent) at Nottingham in the last five years, the second-highest amount of victories at an individual course behind Doncaster (13). His sole runner on Wednesday, Sitar, has form figures of 2116 at the course and looks set to put in a much better performance than her reappearance seventh at Doncaster. Only 3lb higher than when successful at this course in July last year, the strong-travelling daughter of Aqlaam looks a good each-way bet.
