The Punt Daily: Tom Collins with two to follow on Tuesday

EYECATCHER

Soumei (2.30 Brighton)

The two horses likely to be at the head of the market for this 5½f novice event – Global Passion and Haylah – have had plenty of chances and, although they set a reasonable level of form, I'm happy to take them on with the likely improver Soumei. Ed Walker's three-year-old son of Epaulette was well supported on debut at Chelmsford in March and ran a nice race to finish fifth of nine. The form of that contest has been mixed – the winner and second have been beaten twice since, but the third looks a decent sort and won on his next start, while the sixth went close to landing a handicap last time out. You can mark up Soumei's performance as well as he was green throughout and looks sure to come on for that run. Hopefully he'll handle the track.

GOOD THING

Captain Simon (7.30 Ludlow)

Dan Skelton has started the 2018-19 season in flying form and looks set to add another winner to his rapidly-growing tally in the shape of Captain Simon. Set to be partnered by Bridget Andrews, this lightly raced six-year-old has been waiting for the summer weather to come around as he relishes quick conditions and Skelton gets his horses fit to run first time, so the 162-day break isn't a problem. He was a bit disappointing in maiden and novice hurdles in the autumn, but the ground was on the soft side for all three of those races and he now finds himself running off a very lenient mark of 102 on handicap debut. There aren't many improvers in this race, but Captain Simon certainly looks one.
