EYECATCHER

Reconnaissance(4.10 Sandown)

This Lope De Vega colt has been in my tracker since he finished fifth on debut at Lingfield, where he showed plenty of ability despite being green. He had plenty of excuses on his second start at Chelmsford when squeezed out at the start, losing all chance, and ran a much better race last time when fourth at Nottingham on his turf debut. I imagine nurseries were the plan all along and, with the step up to 7f in his favour, I'd not be surprised if a mark of 75 underestimates him.

GOOD THING

Pheidippides(4.45 Sandown)

Three-year-olds have won this race four times in the last eight years and Tom Clover's Pheidippides can enhance that record. The seven-race maiden, who has finished in the first four six times, isn't ahead of the handicapper based on his last few efforts, but he's been running against better horses than he faces today and could be suited by a return to turf. Raced solely on the all-weather this year, Pheidippides' effort two starts back when third to a subsequent winner looks strong, and a replica effort could see him come out on top.
