The Punt Daily: Tom Collins with two to follow on Friday
BANKER
A smart handicapper on his day who won off marks of 96 and 94, Speed Company seemed to lose his way for former trainer John Quinn and was sent to fine dual-purpose handler Ian Williams at the backend of last season. He showed promise in four starts over hurdles, making the frame on each start, before disappointing in an all-weather handicap off 84 when reverting to the Flat in January. Given time off, Speed Company returned with a quiet effort at Doncaster before fairly hacking up off his reduced mark of 80 when last seen. It is not easy to come from the rear at Ripon – being on the front end is a massive plus – but he travelled up to the leaders on the bit and drew clear in the final half furlong. That suggested Williams has got him back to something like his best and he should be able to kick on from there given how well he's treated on past exploits.
EACH-WAY PLAY
Lawrence Mullaney's six-year-old mare falls into the course specialist category at York (form figures of 35531534192) and looks ready to strike for the third time on the Knavesmire now she's dropped in grade on her third start back from a break. Running off her last winning mark of 82, Dark Intention came on bundles for her seasonal reappearance when second over this course and distance last month on good to firm ground and should now appreciate a bit of cut. She handles all types of conditions, but softer ground helps her in the final couple of furlongs where she can sometimes lack the change of gear in big-field handicaps. This isn't the strongest 0-85 you'll see and, at around 10-1, there are far worse each-way bets.
