DARK HORSE

Al Aasy(3.00 Newmarket)

I want to take on short-priced market leader Waldkonig in this Newmarket Stakes as he hung badly right on debut, didn't look the easiest of rides and may not be best suited by the track. Although he clearly has plenty of talent, I'm not convinced this is the best race for him and John Gosden hasn't saddled the winner of this since 1995. Punctuation is one of my favourite young horses but he may not let himself down on the track and ground, so I've fallen on William Haggas' Al Aasy, who caught the eye when third on debut over 7f here and should relish the step up to 1m2f given he is by Sea The Stars. He travelled and quickened like a good horse before flattening out late on and he looks the joker in the pack.

GOOD THING

Major Jumbo (1.50 Newmarket)

High draws are often favoured on the Rowley Mile but I'm hopeful that Kevin Ryan's Major Jumbo can overcome stall one in the Group 3 Palace House Stakes, a race that he finished third in last year behind the talented Mabs Cross and Equilateral. This year's edition looks a bit easier and this is likely to have been his target for quite some time. He has an good record when fresh (form figures of 421912) and clearly goes well at this track with a victory and a third from two starts. The speedy grey will be bang up with the pace and can prove too strong in the final furlong.
