Cape Cavalli(4.10 Newmarket)

The Old Rowley Cup is always ultra competitive and there is plenty of value in the field this year with bookies playing carefully with a couple of unexposed improvers. One that doesn't have a sexy profile is Cape Cavalli, but don't sleep on Simon Crisford's three-year-old who is certainly improving and has good form in the book. He's far from the easiest ride as he often races in snatches, but his three-length second to Monica Sheriff (dual winner since, now rated 102) in a Ffos Las novice in August looks good, while the horse he beat at Goodwood on his penultimate start went on to win by six lengths when last seen. He was extremely unlucky to lose out in a photo at Sandown last time and the application of first-time blinkers, as well as a step up in trip, should bring about further progression. Odds around 18-1 looks very generous to me.

EYECATCHER

Waarif(2.40 York)

David O'Meara has a strong hand in this mile handicap and will probably win the race at a track he does incredibly well at. Although Firmament heads the betting and has good course form, I have fallen off the cliff with him in the past and can't bring myself to tip, nor back him at odds that short. His stablemate Waarif, however, has equally good form in the book with a recent half-length win over subsequent scorer Kynren standing out and has gone up just 2lb since. He probably doesn't have much in hand off his new mark but he is proven on testing ground, has twice finished runner-up in good handicaps here and looks well up to backing up his recent score.
