Recon Mission (1.50 Epsom)

Only two types of horses tend to strike over Epsom's five furlongs, course specialists and horses who are going to become course specialists. Recon Mission thrives on the downhill track, with a record of 0161, and when he was beaten it was by no further than three lengths. He is back here with some concerns about recent form but he was sent off 50-1 and 66-1 but there is a fairly good chance that Tony Carroll will have primed him for a defence of this. His defeats also means he races off a 1lb lower and Marco Ghiani, an excellent jockey on sprinters, has his first ride on the six-year-old.

Ballaquane (7.50 Worcester)

Oliver Sherwood's horses have not quite been right all season but he has had two winners from his last four runners and that could bode well for this once-promising type. He showed ability when second in a bumper, he was green that day yet kept on well, but this season he has been fairly moderate over hurdles. The stable clearly were not firing so there is a chance now that there could be plenty more to come from opening mark of 106 – and tried in a pretty moderate contest. Cheekpieces are also added and a step up in distance was always going to suit. Looking at his pedigree he should be able to handle this quicker surface too.
