Best bet

Oz Legend (3.00 Newcastle)

This three-year-old makes his debut for James Ferguson at a track where his sole success came last year. Oz Legend, a 135,000gns breeze-up buy, defeated rivals now rated 98, 87, 86, 83 and 80 in a mile maiden that day, so a return to Newcastle off a mark of 79 catches the eye. He was gelded after three runs in decent company this year and disappointed in first-time cheekpieces on his final start for Hugo Palmer in July. A change of yard, 109-day break and drop in grade may just bring a return to form.

Each-way play

Rhubarb (6.00 Newcastle)

I don't tend to tip many 16-race maidens but Rhubarb could well outrun her odds on the back of wind surgery in the 6f handicap. She has rarely run a bad race this year and was short of room on a couple of occasions when ninth at Chepstow last time. She was third the time before at Nottingham, with a couple of subsequent winners in behind. She certainly has each-way claims off a low weight and could justify the long trip from Richard Price's Herefordshire yard. Price has saddled two winners, two seconds and a fourth from 11 turf runners at Newcastle, with Rhubarb his first runner on the Tapeta surface.
