Since the trip was reduced from 4m in 1989, the highest-rated winner has been Cloudy Lane off 152 in 2008. Definitly Red won this event in 2017 off 149 and has recorded four Grade 2 successes since. He has returned to handicaps this season and may still be too high in the handicap off 156.

Both he and Saint Xavier have Kelso's Premier Chase as their first preference. Course form in December or January has been very significant for eight former winners.
