Fast-forward from the sales race that Mums Tipple won by 11 lengths at York in August to the present day and you would be puzzled at his price for the Commonwealth Cup. At the time, he was a genuine contender for champion juvenile honours, before Pinatubo kicked up a gear.

The answer to those wondering what went wrong is: plenty, but most of it is explicable. He finished lame when sent off 3-1 for the Middle Park and did not run again until the 2,000 Guineas, when his natural speed was muzzled. Predictably, he pulled hard under restraint and made no impression, eventually being eased down.
