Take a chance on this unexposed, overpriced Newbury runner

Kings Monarch
2.40 Newbury
Buy at 7 on the index

While it is snow and frost, rather than rain, that threatens Newbury's card on Tuesday it is still fancied that conditions will get testing. That should suit Kings Monarch, a mudlark who is yet to get this sort of examination.

It is established that Kings Monarch stays 3m well, as he showed when winning in heavy at Ffos Las in October. He also shaped well on his first attempt at 3m4f at Haydock last year, before he just seemed to run out of gas. Well backed in the same race last month, he was off the pace and never got involved in conditions that gave hold-up horses little chance.

Ffos Las was Kings Monarch's first attempt over 3m or further in the mud. He remains pretty unexposed as a staying chaser- which is what he is bred to be, and the type of horse his yard tends to fashion.

If Haydock can be forgiven, and given the conditions that day it would not be hard to do so, Kings Monarch should be a lot shorter than his current odds for the Mandarin. With the index making him a profitable buy should he fill any of the first four positions, he looks the most attractive spread bet.
