Sweetspots: Pauling and Jacob ready for Southwell strike

Nicky Henderson’s record with National Hunt debutantes stands at 27 per cent, 36-132, however when sending such a runner to Ludlow that record increases considerably to five from 11, a 45 per cent strike-rate. The champion trainer sends Alph, a son of Gold Well, to the course in the 5.10 for his first start.

Ben Pauling and Daryl Jacob have individual strike-rates of 30 and 15 per cent at Southwell. When combining at the track they operate at a 50 per cent strike-rate, and they do so with Salix in the 4.35 and Tel’Art in the 5.35.

Dr Richard Newland is 17 from 53, a 32 per cent strike-rate, with runners making their first for him having switched from another stable. Leoncavallo makes his stable debut in the 4.10 at Ludlow having moved from Ben Pauling’s yard.
