Tom Segal's best bets for day three of the St Leger meeting
Back in 2001 I distinctly remember writing that I thought Sir Mark Prescott's Alleluia was the worst price I'd ever seen for any horse race as she was rated 86 yet was 8-1 to win the Doncaster Cup.
In a way I was right as she drifted to 14-1, but I was much more wrong because she hacked up, beating several of the best stayers around in the process.
I'm not going to make the same mistake today, because Prescott runs St Michel in the 250th Doncaster Cup and, on form, he has a much better chance than Alleluia did.
Thoroughly progressive, St Michel has been winning despite seemingly stopping in front, and the way he cantered past the high-class Oriental Fox at Goodwood last time marked him down as a horse with Group-class ability.
Things didn't go smoothly once he got to the front as he drifted across the track and stopped going forward. Luke Morris will surely delay his challenge a lot longer today and Prescott is fitting cheekpieces, which should help straighten him out.1pt win at 8-1 with bet365 (15-2 with Betfair)
Three-year-olds have a decent record in this particular race and with the obvious exception of Order Of St George the stayers are much of a muchness.
