Smart chase prospect Compadre can prove to be the punters' pal

Count Meribel completed a hat trick despite carrying a penalty at Ascot on Saturday

Drumcliff
Harry Fry
Won, Wincanton, November 23
Being a half-brother to Simonsig, and by Presenting, whose progeny include Denman and War Of Attrition, Drumcliff is bred to be a smart chaser, and he bettered the level of form he showed in bumpers and hurdles on this chasing debut. He crept into this handicap under a confident ride by Niall 'Slippers' Madden, and having made significant headway from three out he stayed on well close home to win with a bit in hand. He could be campaigned with a view to running in the novice handicap chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

6th, Ascot, November 25
The 22 lengths this six-year-old chaser was beaten bears no resemblance to his effort and if he starts to settle better as he gains experience over fences his performances will improve. He was ridden positively from the front in this 3m chase and put the rest under pressure with some slick jumping. He weakened quickly from two out and is 0-3 over fences, but he has a future in this sphere and should soon be winning.

Count Meribel
Nigel Twiston-Davies

Won, Ascot, November 25
When novice hurdlers from this stable are on a roll often they keep finding improvement as they move up the grades. For example, the stable’s Wholestone last season won four hurdles before finishing third in the Albert Bartlett. Count Meribel is following a similar path. This 2m5½f success was his third win since resuming from a summer break and he was able to comfortably concede weight to some promising horses. He deserves a crack at a Graded prize.
