Signposts: unexposed prospect can go well for young trainer

Richard Newland has had three winners from his last four runners and West Of The Edge (3.50 Exeter) can continue his good run. His sole runner, a winner of his last two chase starts, can go in again reunited with Sam Twiston-Davies.

Michael Appleby, who features on the hot trainers list, does well with his new Flat recruits, boasting a 24 per cent strike-rate at the first time of asking. Pick Of Any (5.45 Wolverhampton) caught the eye on his final start for Tony Carroll last month and drops in grade.

George Scott’s handicap debutants are to be taken seriously with a record of 3-7 (43 per cent strike-rate). Gilgamesh stepped forward from his debut eighth when scoring at Nottingham in August and he’s the least exposed in the 7.15 at Wolverhampton. He could show the benefit of a gelding operation too (trainer 2-5; 40 per cent strike-rate).

Paul Cole does well when fitting blinkers for the first time (23 per cent strike-rate) and Honiara, who recorded a career-best RPR over course and distance two runs ago, has them fitted for the first time in the 4.00 at Lingfield.
