Scott Burton has a fancy in each of the two mile Classics at Deauville

Arapaho
2.50 Deauville
1pt win

Simeen
3.25 Deauville
2pts win

Jean-Claude Rouget has made a habit of winning Classics in recent years with horses that have been brought through quietly in conditions races, rather than the testing ground of the traditional trials.

While Ervedya might be considered an exception, having run in the Boussac at two and making her comeback in the Prix Imprudence at three, his other two recent winners of the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (3.25) have swum in shallower waters before bursting onto the scene on the day that mattered most.

Simeen seeks to tread a similar path, having been put away following a couple of easy wins last midsummer and then preserving her unbeaten record - the only one among the 12 fillies that will go to post - in a conditions race over a mile at Chantilly 19 days ago.

That is a slightly tight turnaround for the trainer but he only lost two days in not running Simeen against most of her main opposition in a fully-loaded Prix de la Grotte, a differential which is hopefully balanced out by having a pretty easy race in beating Golden Crown.

In an ideal world you might have wanted the latter to come out and beat up the field in her Listed assignment on Sunday instead of being an honourable second but the imposing Simeen was value for more than her short-neck success when the pair met at Chantilly, while her trainer's belief she is a top-class prospect also breeds confidence.

Tropbeau sets a decent but not insurmountable standard, but if there is a fly in the ointment it could easily be Marieta, whose second in the Prix Marcel Boussac behind Albigna could prove to be just about the best form on offer.

British and Irish layers seem to believe that Andre Fabre will have oiled the rust on Victor Ludorum sufficiently for him to return to winning ways in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (2.50 Deauville), and only the foolhardy would expect anything other than a much improved display following his surprise defeat in the Prix de Fontainebleau.

He has always looked a very high class colt and that quality might be enough to carry him through. But Deauville is a speed trap which can produce those rare sprinter/miler hybrids.

Just look at the likes of Moonlight Cloud, who won arguably the deepest Prix Jacques le Marois this century, and before her Whipper, neither of whom would have stayed a mile strongly enough to repeat that form at Longchamp, or most other tracks.

In other words Victor Ludorum may be tearing into the leaders in the last furlong, but does he have the requisite base speed to be close enough prior to that?

If the answer is no, then both his stablemates have shown plenty of speed at seven furlongs.

Alson doesn't have much to find on his defeat to Victor Ludorum on the Lagardere, but must overcome a 218-day absence.

Arapaho has yet to tackle this trip but the way he travelled around the Longchamp 'toboggan' before easily beating off inferior rivals on his comeback suggests he has both the pace and class to be involved.
