Royal Commando could be on the march for Charlie Hills after Newmarket debut
We have seen some exciting performances in recent weeks, with the Group races at Royal Ascot and the Irish Derby meeting offering an insight into which horses could star for the rest of the season. The column is also up and running for 2019 with three winners since the last instalment.
Wentworth Amigo overturned an odds-on shot to win at Sandown, while Homespin went one better than his Wolverhampton second to win at Windsor. Finally, Little Bird built on her debut to deliver for favourite backers at Doncaster, while Daily Times and Mass Media have just come up short.
Aryaaf
4th, Ripon, June 19
Simon Crisford has made a good start with his juveniles and Aryaaf can add to his tally next time out.
The filly definitely needed her first day at school as she was noticeably green after a slow start. She also had to challenge on the outside of the field, which did not help her cause. She should be a different proposition on her next couple of outings.
Royal Commando
4th, Newmarket, June 21
This colt took on some experienced rivals who had shown a fair level of form on debut and he was far from disgraced. He might have been even closer but for being impeded when trying to challenge on the far rail. Even though the first four home finished in a heap, it is form that should stand up and produce winners.
Cloudea
4th, Pontefract, June 23
The filly made her debut in a race that should produce its share of winners and Richard Fahey will probably find a good opportunity for Cloudea to get her head in front next time out.
She was green when asked for her effort in the straight, but once she got the hang of things she started to motor and ran through to the line. She has a race in her.
Lady Red Moon
3rd, Doncaster, June 29
Behind Little Bird on her second start, Lady Red Moon is still learning on the job but should be able to find an opportunity in the coming weeks.
From a stoutly bred family, she should relish racing at a mile and beyond and her inexperience was evident when wandering around under pressure before finishing on the heels of the runner-up. She might need a bit more time but will be winning down the line.
Trainer to note
Clive Cox is among the juvenile winners, with Hand On My Heart and Positive looking very useful. The trainer has had seven two-year-old winners so far and, with three coming in the last fortnight, there are signs his string is coming to hand.
