Joao Moreira’s six-day suspension has opened up a raft of opportunities for his arch rival Zac Purton, starting with the talented Champion’s Way in the 6f handicap (12.45), one of the best bets on the attractive card at Happy Valley.

Although John Size displayed an allegiance to Moreira by retaining him in his hour of need when a Japanese contract fell through last December, the Australian trainer did not hesitate turning to Purton when he required a top jockey in the Brazilian’s absence.

Champion’s Way, a son of Hinchinbrook, looks every inch the type of horse Size excels with. The three-year-old won his only start in a professional manner and has continued to impress in his work since.

He has gone up 8lb in the handicap but, with a nice inside draw in stall two, he can continue his rise through the ranks.

Purton later rides the in-form Har Har Heart for Size in the concluding 1m½f handicap (2.50) but he faces fierce opposition in the shape of the Irish-bred Arcada, a ten-race maiden in Hong Kong who is now on a dangerous handicap mark.

In 2016, when trained by Joseph O’Brien, the five-year-old defeated subsequent Classic winner Capri in winning his maiden at the Curragh, and he also placed third behind Best Of Days in the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket.

Much has happened in his career since, but the son of Rip Van Winkle is ready to break the ice locally, with the brilliant Karis Teetan in the saddle.

Mauritius-born Teetan has a full book of eight rides and can start with a winner courtesy of Raichu in the opening 6f handicap (11.15), who has been a model of consistency recently and looks the one to beat.

Teetan has already chalked up 50 winners this season and continues to ride with verve and finesse – it is no surprise he is in such demand.
