Pontefract Placepot picks: Tom Segal with his perm for the Flat action

It's hard to know how good the better three-year-old milers will be when compared with the older horses, but we get our first clue in the Listed Pomfret Stakes (4.05).

Alflaila wouldn't be one of the stellar ones, but he's pretty good and he comes up against some rock-solid older horses. My feeling is that he will come up short andMagical Morning, who will enjoy going back round a bend, might be the safer choice for Placepot purposes.

Wilkins picks himself in the mile maiden for older horses (4.40), while Your Spirit(1.45) has some decent form in the context of the two-year-old fillies race that kicks off the Pontefract card.

As usual, it will be the handicaps that are the hardest legs to get through but Corinthia Knight won the 6f handicap (3.30) last year off a much higher mark and shaped as if he was running back into form at Carlisle last time.

However, he's clearly not as good as he once was and he can take a bit of time to warm up, so the classy topweight Persuasion should be included too.

Piecederesistance and Highwaygrey ran well over course and distance recently and there is no reason why they won't do the same in the 1m2f handicap (2.55).

The mile handicap (2.20) might be the trickiest race to get through. Poet's Dawn is in form and should go well, while Asdaa might have finally dropped back to a mark he can win off.
