Pleasant Man could spring a surprise in Vase with forecast rain in his favour

Not many Roger Charlton-trained juveniles go off favourite for their debut, but the money poured in for Pleasant Man to land a mile novice on soft ground at Haydock last September and he looked a smart prospect when running away with it to score in comfortable fashion.

Charlton thought enough of Pleasant Man to run him in the Group 2 Royal Lodge at Newmarket three weeks later and he was far from disgraced despite finishing last of five.

Pleasant Man was beaten less than five lengths on that occasion, recording a Racing Post Rating of 101, and a reproduction of that form would not put him far off the best of these.

He has to bounce back from a disappointing run at Windsor on his reappearance when he was a beaten 5-6 favourite, but he might have found 1m2f on the sharp side that day and ran on well to finish third. The extra two and a half furlongs in trip promises to bring further progress, while he handles cut in the ground and the forecast rain looks in his favour.
