Paul Kealy with a big perm for Saturday's rollover Ascot Placepot
The Tote Placepot for Saturday's excellent card at Ascot starts with £21,315 in the pool thanks to a rollover, which makes it quite an enticing play.
It's not going to be easy, though, as we have desperate ground and some really competitive races, starting with the opening leg (12.40), in which bookmakers are going 6-1 the field.
Blame The Game looked tough when pulling clear with an odds-on shot at Plumpton. He's a brother to the talented Spiritofthegames, and starts handicap life off an enticing mark of 115. There are three-milers among his siblings, so the conditions shouldn't cause an issue.
Hugos Other Horse also looks all about stamina, but we'd better go with three here. Fawsley Spirit, who tumbled down the handicap during a poor season for Ben Pauling, is still well treated after going up 5lb for an excellent second on his return and makes up the list.
Itchy Feet and Caribean Boy are the two stand-outs in the next (1.15), but choosing between them is tough so they're both going in.
In leg three (1.50), Bennys King shaped well when fifth at Aintree on his return and won second time out last year. He also ran the best race of his life when runner-up in identical conditions at this track in January.
Enrichissant is also worth including. He has been running right up to form on good ground in three runs this season, and won with his head in his chest by 14 lengths on his final start last term on the only occasion he has run on heavy.
Main Fact will handle the ground better than most in the Long Walk (2.25), but he has to improve, so I'll also add Thyme Hill. It was obviously a choice between him and Paisley Park, but in these conditions younger, fresher legs are preferred.
The Conditional deserves to be favourite for the Silver Cup (3.00), but you have to wonder whether he'll be on top form after a lung-bursting third in the Ladbrokes Trophy just three weeks ago. I'll leave him out and go with mud-loving Espoir De Guye and four-time ex-French winner Enfant Roi, who runs off what could prove a tidy mark.
The last is no easier, so it's three again, with Lightly Squeeze, Malaya and Kid Commando ticking the boxes.
This is a pretty large perm, but don't forget you can have unit stakes of as low as a penny these days.
