Paul Kealy provides his Placepot perm at Newcastle on Northumberland Plate day

Credit: Alan Crowhurst

With Newmarket’s fields having cut up, Newcastle seems to best place to go for a Placepot and it’s easier than you would expect given the Northumberland Plate is too late on the card to be included.

Sometimes favourites are just not worth taking on and that’s the case with Tilsitin the opening leg (12.15) as he has shown far more than anything else in the field.

I’d be tempted to leave out Inhaler in the following novice (12.45) as he won a muddling race on his debut and may struggle to concede 7lb and upwards to his rivals.

On pedigree the two most interesting are Toussarokand Fayathaanand I’ll go with both.

The following sprint will need some cover as it is competitive, so I have picked three.

Staxtonwas only seventh at Newmarket on his return, but in a hot race and the second and eighth subsequently finished second and fourth in the Wokingham. He has been dropped 3lb and is very well handicapped now.

Stick him in with the top two, and . The former goes very well fresh, while the latter probably went for home too soon in the Buckingham Palace last time, but didn’t run badly.

Mubakker (1.50) beat Glen Shiel quite easily on his return, but he still has more improving to do in Group 3 company than his odds suggest.

I’ll be taking him on with the ever-consistent and , who is an outsider, but keeps on improving and will love the likely strong pace.

The same can be said about , and he can go in the 2.25 with the very well handicapped .

The final leg doesn’t look that competitive and is best left to the unbeaten .
