Paul Kealy provides his Placepot perm at Epsom on Derby day
Three of the Tote Placepot races on Derby day at Epsom offer only two places to go for, so it’s far from plain sailing.
The opening leg (1.50) is particularly tricky as none of the juveniles has come close to running to the level normally required to win it.
Mark Johnston’s Mutazawwedhas a fair bit of pace and could be suited to the track, while I’d also be inclined to give a chance to Andrew Balding’s .
He was the second-highest-priced of his first-season sire’s 25 lots at the Arqana Sale in October (€100,000) and his trainer’s horses remain in excellent form.
If there’s a banker among the small-field races it’s surely the ultra consistent (2.25) in the next.
Thursday’s rain will ensure the ground won’t be too fast for him and there’s a little bit more scheduled to fall anyway.
Shine So Bright is the big danger on form, but he was beaten at halfway in the Diamond Jubilee and that shouldn’t have been the case given the pace he has.
If the form of Desert Icon’s wide-margin romp at Newmarket on Sunday is to be believed, he is still well treated in the next (3.00) under a 6lb penalty, but it did come in a small field and on very fast ground.
All his best form is in small fields, so I’m prepared to take him on and Ironcladis the one who stands out.
Outsider has the course form to be a player, too, while Tinandaliis also added in what is a tough affair.
Both the Investec Oaks (3.40) favourites will be hard to kick out of the frame, but I’ll stick with , who we know definitely stays the trip.
Cloak Of Spirits is the form filly in leg five (4.15), but she took a step back from her 1,000 Guineas second when only fifth on easier ground at Royal Ascot and looks vulnerable.
Roger Varian’s Fooratis a sister to the top-class Benbatl and has evidently inherited a fair bit of his ability given the way she cruised home to make it 2-2 last time.
Two of the likely most covered horses in the Derby (4.55) are coming from stalls one and two (English King and Mogul). Stall one is a particularly bad 0-69 in fields of ten over 1m4f since 2006 (stall two 4-77).
Leave them out and stick in , who may not stay but whose class edge over most of the field should take him close to the frame.
I’m convinced my outsider can run well, while I’ll add a better-berthed O’Brien horse in .
