Our US expert pinpoints two horses to follow at Will Rogers Downs
Sedaris
9.15 Will Rogers Downs
1pt win
Settle Down Eileen
9.45 Will Rogers Downs
1pt win
Will Rogers Downs is set to fly the flag for US racing again on Tuesday evening with a typically tricky nine-race card.
The first selection comes in the feature $26,400 allowance race (9.15), an extremely tight-knit affair on paper despite the fact just six runners go to post.
It is easy to make a case for the whole field but I'm going to take a chance on Kenneth Nolen's Sedaris, a four-year-old gelding who is steadily improving and could easily get the run of the race.
Sedaris likes to stalk the pacemakers in third or fourth position and should get a perfect spot with likely leaders Uncail and Lord Stratton set to stride on.
Uncail, the only horse drawn inside Sedaris, can clear the way for the selection to grab the box seat in third and he appears to have the class to run down the front-running duo, who might ruin each other's chances by vying for the early advantage.
Then it will be the case of whether Sedaris can hold on with fast finishers Dak Da Man and Big Game Hunter looking to lunge late, but rider Floyd Wethey is experienced at producing his mounts at the right time at this venue. Although it is the first time Sedaris has run here, his recent outings at Sam Houston Park indicate he is ready to return to the winner's enclosure.
There appears to be plenty of early pace on offer in the following $10,450 starter optional claimer (9.45) and that should set the race up for Robertino Diodoro's Settle Down Eileen.
With plenty of recent winning form on show, hopes are high punters don't just latch onto this six-year-old mare and send her off at a short price, despite the fact she has the best form in the book.
A ten-time winner from 41 starts, Settle Down Eileen has been set almost impossible tasks on her latest two outings at Turf Paradise by riders Alex Cruz and Katie Guglielmino. She flew home off the final turn on both occasions to erode deficits of several lengths, taking second each time.
The start before, Settle Down Eileen was held up an incredible 25 lengths off a fast early pace over 5½f but made a huge mid-race move and ended up getting up in the final few strides.
She steps up to 6f, which will definitely suit, is partnered by crack young rider Ty Kennedy and is the one to beat. A morning line price of 3-1 would look serious value should they go hard early.
