Top-class novice chaser last year who always shaped as though he would improve over further but he struggled in his first campaign out of novice company last season.

He failed to show his true form in those three starts, but gave notice he might be on the way back when bolting up by ten lengths in a Listed chase on his seasonal reappearance at Thurles last month.

He was entitled to win that race in such a manner, but that was his first start over 2m6f and, given he races and jumps exuberantly, he might be even more effective in a strongly run race over 3m at this tight track.

He needs to improve again to trouble the best of these but remains unexposed at this distance and has won six of his nine starts over fences.

Paul Nicholls, Nicky Henderson and Colin Tizzard have dominated this race in recent years but there aren’t any better than Willie Mullins and the fact he sends Footpad here as his only contender could be a tip in itself.

He is certainly the most interesting runner outside of the big three – Cyrname, Lostintranslation and Clan Des Obeaux. It might only take one of those to underperform for buyers to cash in on Footpad.

3.05 Kempton

Sporting (50-25-10) 24-27 Cyrname, 23-26 Lostintranslation, 18-20 Clan Des Obeaux, 6-8 Footpad, 5-7 Thistlecrack, 2-4 Aso.

Match bet 0-1.5 Cyrname/Lostintranslation.
