I have always enjoyed the legends' race on the first day of Doncaster's St Leger meeting, even though being able to remember several of the jockeys taking part riding as apprentices reminds me of my age.

It must surely be an advantage for those jockeys who not so long ago were still at the top of their profession, as was the case last year, and the eye is immediately drawn to Joseph O'Brien and Richard Hughes, but unfortunately neither of their mounts make a great deal of appeal so I'll be sitting the race out.

However, I will be getting involved in the next contest, as a case can be made for Shanghai Glory in the Howcroft Industrial Supplies Handicap (4.10).
