Newmarket Placepot picks: Tom Segal provides his perm for 1,000 Guineas day

Santa Barbara is the big conundrum horse for punters on 1,000 Guineas day at Newmarket.

She is the worst horse in the race going by form, totally inexperienced and by a sire that does best on soft ground over further than a mile, yet she is a very short price because everyone has been told she is a superstar.

For me it is a no brainer for Placepot punters to leave her out. There is simply no mileage in including her because she has blowout potential and is going to be many people's banker.

Instead I would include Sacred (3.40), who won the Nell Gwyn with ears pricked and I don't see her having any trouble staying the mile.

One to consider against the grain is Fev Rover, who will appreciate the return to fast ground. Her two-year-old form stacks up well.

It's a big day for William Haggas-trained fillies because not only does he have a big chance in the Guineas but he also runs what could turn out to be his Oaks filly in the Pretty Polly.

Sea Karats (2.25) was desperately unlucky to get beaten when well fancied for a Newbury maiden on her sole start and she is going to leave that form miles behind.

Lady Bowthorpe (3.00) has been crying out for a strongly run mile on fast ground and should get that in the Betfair Dahlia Stakes, although Freyja would be dangerous if getting loose on the front. It's safest to include both.

Zabeel Champion (1.50) is in great form and should prefer Newmarket to Ripon where he's been winning recently. He can be banked on in the 1m4f handicap, while Secret Strength (4.15) showed up well at the breeze-up sales recently and should be hard to keep out of the frame in the juvenile maiden.

The hardest race to get through might be the opening Better Odds On Betfair Exchange Handicap as all six runners have a chance. For that reason it's best to include a couple, starting with Western Symphony (1.15), who should appreciate the fast ground.

Francesco Guardi had some good two-year-old form and is also selected.
