Newmarket eyecatcher Tsar an exciting prospect for Gosden
A pecking order is starting to develop in the juvenile ranks following Newmarket's July festival, and with Goodwood on the horizon it feels like the season is reaching the halfway stage.
There was more success for the column with Royal Commando backing up his promising Newmarket debut with victory at Doncaster, while Dragon Command managed to get his head in front at Hamilton. Lady Red Moon, a selection for the column last time, has been declared for Wolverhampton on Wednesday.
Punchbowl Flyer
5th, Chepstow, July 2
This colt did not grasp what was required for much of his debut, running green and failing to pick up the bridle. But then in the final furlong the penny dropped and he made some steady late progress.
Trainer Eve Johnson Houghton has had some promising juvenile winners this season and while Punchbowl Flyer may need a couple more outings to get fully clued up he should find an opportunity down the line.
I liked how Dick Datchery travelled into the race on his debut, but he just lacked a bit of experience when asked to go and challenge at the business end.
To the colt's credit he did keep on, and with that experience under his belt he should be a different proposition when next seen.
Master Spy
4th, Newbury, July 11
A lot of people will have added Master Spy to their notebook and his debut effort was very encouraging. Towards the rear approaching the final furlong, it looked like he would be well beaten, but he stayed on nicely under hands and heels.
His debut came over six furlongs, but he is bred to get further and should do better when faced with a stiffer test.
A race that often provides some useful sorts looked well up to scratch this year and Tsar should quickly leave this effort behind.
Having been slowly away, the colt was allowed to recover in his own time and then made a nice challenge to finish fourth. While never dangerous he was not given a hard time in the closing stages and should be winning soon.
Trainer to note
Karl Burke often produces some quality two-year-olds, and while his team have been slightly slow to come to hand this term the signs are they are now firing on all cylinders. Having had five juvenile winners through May and June, July has already yielded four winners and his string appear to be in good nick.
