Nap of the day: best horse racing tips for the day's six meetings

Thursday's best bets from the Racing Post's unbeatable Spotlights team

Epsom

8.30: Essencial

It's hard to know what Volenti achieved when winning at 28-1 over course-and-distance two weeks ago, but at least he proved he is effective under the conditions so is respected up 4lb. However, preference is for Essencial whose only win came over seven furlongs and his last couple of efforts over six furlongs suggest he will appreciate the return to this trip. Lelabad and Silver Kitten look best of the others.
David Bellingham

Galway

4.30: Falcon Eight

Not beaten far in third in a Grade 2 event on his most recent run over hurdles, last year's Chester Cup winner Falcon Eight has run creditably in the Chester Cup and Queen Alexandra since then. He can see off a likely challenge from the mare Hors Piste, Grade 1-placed at Punchestown before a bloodless Kilbeggan win. Gordon Elliott's pair Salvador Ziggy and The Friday Man may be involved in a battle for minor honours.
Alan Sweetman

Goodwood

2.25: Royal Scotsman

Coventry third Royal Scotsman holds very strong claims and is taken to give the Cole stable a belated fourth success in the Richmond, following wins in 1985, 1991 and 1994 when just Paul was on the licence and son Oliver was still a child. Progressive Chateau, unexposed Bluelight Bay and promising Al Karrar may prove the biggest threats, in that order.

Nottingham

3.50: At The Double

Scudamore returned to the Flat with a 1m6f win here 26 days ago and he's respected back up in trip. Cloudy Rose looks interesting after her close call at Chepstow last time, while Mukha Magic has had a good spell since May and should be in the mix again back on turf. However, it is hard to get away from Sir Mark Prescott's lightly raced three-year-old At The Double, who is well treated under a penalty for his five-length win at Salisbury and is open to more progress on this step up to two miles.

Salisbury

8.15: Ravens Ark
Throne Hall and Star Caliber should ensure this is a proper test and the long-absent Infrastructure will need to be cherry-ripe to make a winning return. Songo is up in grade and this may be best left to Ravens Ark, whose progress halted at Newcastle last time but who had previously been making good strides as a stayer.
Paul Smith

Stratford

3.42: Lady Reset

Last year's winner Lady Reset has done well on the Flat since perhaps not taking a liking to Cartmel on her final run over hurdles, and she gets the vote over old foe Yauthym and the in-form Karannelle.
