1pt winYou do have to wonder sometimes what tracks have to do to attract runners and I had every sympathy with Ludlow, who on Wednesday voiced disappointment on Twitter at the lack of runners on a card offering £72,500 in prize-money.

For a small track, Ludlow is one of the best when it comes to prize-money and 37 entries is poor, especially when you consider 57 were declared at Chepstow, where there is less than half the funds on offer.

Indeed, even the Ludlow bumper, whose first prize would pay for all four places at Chepstow and have plenty left to spare, has attracted just five compared to the Welsh track's nine.
