Keith Melrose with his way through Goodwood's Friday Placepot races

A day that flits between the difficulty levels, so saving the pennies for where we might need it is the best approach. In the first, for me that means banking on Mafia Power who looked a useful sort in the making last time. I just cannot see three finishing in front of him, all being fair.

Similarly in the Oak Tree Stakes, misfortune will have to intervene for One Master to finish unplaced. I am just as big a fan of Khaloosy, but acknowledge the fiddly nature of the Thoroughbred Stakes and am nervous enough to back him up with My Oberon.

The Golden Mile is the big race and prudence elsewhere allows us to take four. Cliffs Of Capri and Vale Of Kent take little explanation with their solid background in big-field handicaps. The same goes for Afaak, but you have to squint a bit to see his form. I thought he ran well in the Hunt Cup on his reappearance. Zwayyan is also drawn in a less than ideal stall but otherwise has been holding his form and will carry little of the pool.

Gone are the days when Battaash was a horse to aim at in the Placepot, especially at Goodwood and with two places to aim at, he will take up one barring mishap.

The closing Glorious Stakes is a tricky seven-runner affair to finish. It could be tactical, so include a pace option (Pablo Escobarr) as well as form choice Communique.
