Keith Melrose analyses the credentials of four favourites in the US
No No Nina
6.00 Gulfstream Park
SP forecast 8-5
Has landed in a weak-looking race and has run to a fair level on a couple of starts so far, but could not make much of an inside draw over the same course and distance last time, weakening into seventh. Has since worked quite well, but both her work and her form is quite a way behind that of Myfirstexwife, the mount of Irad Ortiz.
Conclusion Claims not disputed, but Myfirstexwife is a likelier winner.
Gem Thief
6.35 Gulfstream Park
SP forecast 9-5
This could well be a race to watch, as if (and it is a big if, admittedly) US horses are allowed to ship across for Royal Ascot this year, there is a good chance that one of the Wesley Ward-trained two in this race will be among them. Tharos is an expensive purchase, but track work and jockey bookings suggest that Gem Thief is the first string. Ward is 5-8 with debutante fillies this season and it seems more than likely that one of his will take first prize in this $65,000 race.
Conclusion All indications are the market has it the right way round.
Bean Counter
10.19 Gulfstream ParkSP forecast 2-1
Bound to be popular for the combination of Todd Pletcher and Joel Rosario, this filly has only been out of the first three once since her debut. Her latest start, in a claimer with a similar purse to this race, she put up a career-best effort to finish a clear second over the same mile on the turf here. She is well drawn again and can take a lot of beating.
Conclusion Well worth her place atop the betting.
Flora Fantasy
10.49 Gulfstream ParkSP forecast 6-5
Has found a real seam at optional claiming level recently, winning her last two. Has been kept on the go with some recent workouts and her consistency will hold her in good stead against a field of less exposed, but probably quite limited, fillies and mares.
Conclusion Should be hard to beat.
