1pt each-waySandown's Matchbook Brigadier Gerard Stakes meeting is always the best evening fixture of the year – and one for proper racing fans too as we won’t be plagued by disinterested visitors getting in the way while waiting for some nonentity to start singing after the last.

The feature race aside, the fields have held up well and the Matchbook Commission Free On All Sports National Stakes (6.35) sets a real poser as four of the first five in the betting – Blown By Wind, Konchek, Wedding Date and Kinks – are drawn in the four highest stalls.

Only twice in the last ten years has the winner been drawn higher than four and while you could argue the field is usually on the small side for this, 44 per cent of the winners of all 5f handicaps with nine or more runners have been won by stalls one, two or three since 2010, so the draw advantage on the far rail is real.
