John Gosden has some exciting prospects for later in the season
Next week Royal Ascot will take centre stage and it will be fascinating to see who comes out on top in the six juvenile races. Some recent winners have booked their ticket to the fixture while we are also starting to see some types who will enjoy racing beyond sprint trips.
Seconditis continues to plague the column, with Microscopic, Yarrow Gate and Homespin all finishing second. Hopefully the tide will turn soon.
Wentworth Amigo
Jamie Osborne
Leicester, May 28, 5th
Not unfancied for his debut, Wentworth Amigo found the early pace too hot to handle and was detached from the field after a furlong. With two furlongs left he looked like he would be well beaten, but he then started to get the hang of things and stayed on promisingly. He might like a bit further, but this outing should have brought him along plenty.
Mass Media
John Gosden
Yarmouth, May 30, 5th
Plenty of the runners in this 7f maiden should be seen to better effect later in the season, including Mass Media. The colt was on the wing of the field, with the main action emerging down the centre. Despite being a little apart from the front four, Mass Media still kept on nicely and should be better when getting to run over a mile and slightly beyond.
Too Shy Shy
Richard Spencer
Kempton, June 5, 6th
The money was down for this filly on her second start as she was backed at big prices to build on her debut effort. She broke very well to lead but did a bit too much on the front end. Still disputing the lead with a furlong left, she was then swallowed up in the final stages. If dropping back to five furlongs, she might be able to last home when next seen.
Daily Times
John Gosden
Newmarket, June 8, 4th
Last year John Gosden won this race with Calyx and, while his representative this term was unable to follow up, she should be winning soon. Having broken alertly, Daily Times travelled nicely until two furlongs out, when she started to feel the pinch. The front pair in the race pulled well clear but she stuck to her task for fourth. As a half-sister to talented US performer Newspaperofrecord, there should be more to come from Daily Times.
Trainer to note
Simon Crisford has started sending out his juveniles in the last two weeks and has had a winner and two seconds from five runners. Those runners-up, A'Ali and Al Raya, are winners in waiting as they came a long way clear and just missed out, while the winner, Last Surprise, looked very useful at Lingfield. It will be interesting to see what other juveniles the yard have to unleash.
