Zac Purton is set to complete a lap of honour when collecting his fourth Hong Kong jockeys’ title, and the biggest question is how many winners the Australian can chalk up at this final meeting of the season.
With a book of nine rides at Happy Valley, where he can give even the best a masterclass, Purton is poised to register at least a treble on a card that is likely to be dominated by favourites.
Purton has ridden 145 winners, and with Joao Moreira absent because of a suspension, he can reap another impressive harvest, which should include Party Together, who he rides for the first time in the Class 4 handicap, over an extended mile (1.15).
A 20-start maiden in Hong Kong is not much of a recommendation at face value, but this is a five-year-old, who won the 2018 Derby Italiano in Rome and was five from eight before export.
There is no doubt he was harshly handicapped on arrival, but having descended two grades, he now has plenty going for him. With minor placings on three of his last four starts, he is in form, and a win would allow trainer Peter Ho a little breathing space in his quest to meet the criteria to retain his licence.
While the jockeys’ title is settled, the trainers’ championship is not. Ricky Yiu (67) leads Tony Cruz (63) and Francis Lui (63) by four wins, which would normally be a comfortable buffer, but Lui has several outstanding chances among his seven runners — and he also has Purton in his corner.
The Australian is aboard Victoriam, who will attempt his fourth win in five starts in the finale, the Class 2 6f sprint handicap (3.50), and it is not impossible for the son of I Am Invincible to pull it off despite a 6lb hike in the handicap.
Purton can also win on the Frankie Lor-trained Kinda Cool, who looks set to break the ice in the Class 4 6f sprint handicap (1.45). The three-year-old has run some cracking races in defeat, and drawn in stall five, he should be handy most of the way.
John Moore’s best chance of a winner at his final meeting as a Hong Kong trainer is Flying Monkey in the Class 5 5f sprint handicap (12.15). Sunny Boy in the final race (3.50) will bring to a close a 49-year association with Hong Kong racing.
