Joao Moreira returns to Hong Kong after a disappointing trip to Australia and can land the 1m1f Gloucester Handicap (12.45) aboard Bullish Glory at Happy Valley.
The ‘Magic Man’, who rode Constantinople to finish 13th in the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, can look forward to better luck back on home soil with eight good rides, which include Bullish Glory, a six-year-old who has gone 26 starts without a win since being imported from Italy.
That may sound an unpromising statistic, but there is a race for every horse in Hong Kong, provided they start high enough in the ratings, and it is interesting that Bullish Luck has now dropped 32lb since first arriving at Tony Cruz's stable two years ago.
The former Group 2 winner was switched to Michael Chang after failing to win in 13 starts for Cruz, and now competes off a winnable mark. His latest second (beaten a neck) over this course and distance was a solid pointer and he can be followed with confidence from gate two.
High Rev appears to be Zac Purton’s best ride of the day in the Jaffe Handicap (1.45). The five-year-old has gone up a hefty 10lb for a last-start success, but he won with such authority that he can probably go in again.
The David Hall-trained gelding is well up to this grade and he should be parked in behind the pace from an inside draw.
Neil Callan took some time to get rolling this season, but he is in full flow now and he looks to have another good opportunity on First Responder in the O'Brien Handicap (2.50).
Callan was in the saddle when he finished second in a similar race last month and following a promising trial at Conghua, the son of Helmet looks poised to strike.
