The perceived wisdom seems to be that Japanese horses always come up short in the best races in Europe but three seconds and a couple of other placed horses in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hardly suggests they struggle too much and earlier in the season A Shin Hikari won the Ganay by ten lengths.

Throw in a Melbourne Cup 1-2 and lots of successes in Dubai and the Japanese have proved themselves one of the strongest racing nations in the world over middle distances. This year their Derby winner Makahiki is over in France and getting ready for October.
