Given the proliferation of horses rated in the high 90s and above, the best handicaps like the Betfred Ebor are very different in make up to how they used to be. It's virtually impossible for a three-year-old to get a run in the race anymore and the race is usually full of exposed types with no secrets from the handicapper or punters.

As a consequence, ante-post and on the day punters have really been struggling and bar a couple of high-profile winners, namely Purple Moon and Tiger Cliff, the race has a lottery feel to it. In fact since the start of this millennium the average price of the Ebor winner has been over 17-1.
