Hong Kong tips: Jim McGrath with three bets for Wednesday's card at Sha Tin
Loriz
9.05 Sha Tin
2pts win
Righteous Doctrine
9.40 Sha Tin
2pts win
War Of Courage
10.50 Sha Tin
2pts win
Joao Moreira committed the cardinal sin of riding over-confidently when War Of Courage was just touched off at the start of June, but he can atone when the same combination contest the closing 5f handicap (10.50).
Baltic Whisper came from the clouds to nail War Of Courage last time and re-opposes here, but the more potent threat might be the Douglas Whyte-trained Storm Warnings, an import from Australia who made a big impression on his local debut.
War Of Courage has scored twice from eight starts and has not been out of the first three on his five other runs, underlining the three-year-old's consistency for trainer Manfred Man.
A high draw is an advantage on the straight course – the stands rail is always favoured – and Moreira is unlikely to relax when in front close home. War Of Courage is the best bet on the card.
Moreira's chances of lifting a fourth jockeys' title have all but slipped away as he trails Zac Purton 137-131, but the Brazilian could add another win to his record with the progressive Righteous Doctrine in the 1m1f Hong Kong Reunification Cup (9.40).
The jockey rode Righteous Doctrine on his first two Hong Kong wins, both of which came on the dirt track, before Karis Teetan added a third success for the five-year-old when scoring on the turf two starts ago.
The feature of that latest win was the turn-of-foot displayed by Righteous Doctrine, an excellent example of the patience of trainer Michael Chang.
The danger this time is Columbus County, who has been knocking on the door all season.
In the trainers' championship there is a great battle developing with trailblazing Ricky PF Yiu leading Francis KW Lui 62-61 with just five meetings remaining. Tony Cruz is hot on their heels with 58 wins.
But Yiu is fancied to respond with a timely win with Loriz in the 6f Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup (9.05), a race where Zac Purton’s mount Mig Energy is expected to be sent off the hot favourite.
Rider Vagner Borges has impressed over the past few weeks and should make use of the inside draw on Loriz, who will be attempting his third win of the season.
