Hong Kong tips: Jim McGrath with three bets for Sha Tin's Wednesday card
Winner Method
1.15 Sha Tin
2pts winGold Comet
2.45 Sha Tin
2pts winStar Performance
3.15 Sha Tin
2pts win
A rare mixed meeting under lights at Sha Tin features the half-brother to 2007 Dubai World Cup hero Invasor attempting his maiden win in the Class 4 handicap (2.45), over 1m½f on dirt.
The Argentine-bred Gold Comet has every chance of living up to his illustrious bloodlines having already shown promise with two second placings on the all-weather, his last start over 6f being a strong pointer to this.
Making up ground in the straight, the four-year-old gave every indication a step up in trip would be to his advantage which he now gets. Drawn on the inside in gate 1 and with Joao Moreira booked for the first time, the Tony Millard-trained gelding has plenty in his favour.
Gold Comet's dam Quendom was very young when she foaled Invasor, and although there is a prejudice against elderly mares in the main, there are exceptions, and it is possible Gold Comet could be one of them. El Valiente, who had no luck last time, is his chief danger.
A race under lights on the 5f turf straight is a novelty, so maybe it's appropriate to have one unbeaten over course and distance sent off favourite. Winner Method will be hard to beat in this Class 3 handicap (1.15) as he attempts to make it four wins from four.
Trainer Danny Shum has placed the Deep Field three-year-old to perfection and, despite a 9lb hike in the handicap for his last win, he is still good enough to continue his winning sequence in the hands of Zac Purton.
His main opposition is Carroll Street, who is potentially very smart. He has only a feather weight to carry, with Jerry Chau claiming 5lb, and receives 15lb from Winner Method.
Purton, who is chipping away at Moreira's lead (105-119) in the jockeys' championship, can also land the other turf race on the card, the Class 3 7f handicap (3.15), aboard the luckless Star Performance.
The Tony Cruz-trained five-year-old did not have the rub of the green in the home straight on his last start, but his minor placing was confirmation that he is in form and still dangerous on his present mark.
The Millard-trained Spend is on the improve and should be included in multiples.
Bets can be placed into HK pools with the Tote, Coral and Ladbrokes, first race at Sha Tin is off at 12.15.
